gāyanti tvā gāyatriṇo 'rcanty arkam arkiṇaḥ |     

brahmāṇas tvā śatakrata ud vaṃśam iva yemire ||

Rig Veda 1.10.1

 

“The chanters (of the Soma) hymn you, Śatakratu; the reciters of the Ṛk praise you, who are worthy of praise; the Bra-hmaṇas raise you aloft, like a bamboo pole.”

 

यत्सानोः सानुमारुहद्भूर्यस्पष्ट कर्त्वम् ।    

तदिन्द्रो अर्थं चेतति यूथेन वृष्णिरेजति ॥    

yat sānoḥ sānum āruhad bhūry aspaṣṭa kartvam |     

tad indro arthaṃ cetati yūthena vṛṣṇir ejati ||

Rig Veda 1.10.2

 

 “Indra, the showever (of blessings), knows the object (of his worshipper), who has performed many acts of worship (with the Soma gathered) on the ridges of the mountain, and (therefore) comes with the troop (of Maruts).” 

 

 युक्ष्वा हि केशिना हरी वृषणा कक्ष्यप्रा ।     

अथा न इन्द्र सोमपा गिरामुपश्रुतिं चर ॥    

yukṣvā hi keśinā harī vṛṣaṇā kakṣyaprā |     

athā na indra somapā girām upaśrutiṃ cara ||

Rig Veda 1.10.3

 

“Indra, drinker of the Soma, having put to your long-maned, vigorous, and well-conditioned steeds, come nigh to hear our praises.”

 

  एहि स्तोमाँ अभि स्वराभि गृणीह्या रुव ।     

ब्रह्म च नो वसो सचेन्द्र यज्ञं च वर्धय ॥    

ehi stomām̐ abhi svarābhi gṛṇīhy ā ruva |     

brahma ca no vaso sacendra yajñaṃ ca vardhaya ||

Rig Veda 1.10.4

 

“Come, Vasu, (to this our rite); reply to our hymns, answer (to our praises), respond to (our prayers); be propitious, Indra, to our sacrifice, and (bestow upon us abundant) food.”

 

 उक्थमिन्द्राय शंस्यं वर्धनं पुरुनिष्षिधे ।     

शक्रो यथा सुतेषु णो रारणत्सख्येषु च ॥    

uktham indrāya śaṃsyaṃ vardhanam puruniṣṣidhe |     

śakro yathā suteṣu ṇo rāraṇat sakhyeṣu ca ||

Rig Veda 1.10.5

 

“The hymn, the cause of increase, is to be repeated to Indra, the repeller of many foes, that Śakra may speak (with kindness) to our sons and to our friends.”

 

 तमित्सखित्व ईमहे तं राये तं सुवीर्ये ।     

स शक्र उत नः शकदिन्द्रो वसु दयमानः ॥   

 tam it sakhitva īmahe taṃ rāye taṃ suvīrye |     

sa śakra uta naḥ śakad indro vasu dayamānaḥ ||

Rig Veda 1.10.6

 

“We have recourse to Indra for his friendship, for wealth, for perfect might; for he, the powerful Indra, conferring wealth, is able (to protect us).

 

 सुविवृतं सुनिरजमिन्द्र त्वादातमिद्यशः ।     

गवामप व्रजं वृधि कृणुष्व राधो अद्रिवः ॥    

suvivṛtaṃ sunirajam indra tvādātam id yaśaḥ |     

gavām apa vrajaṃ vṛdhi kṛṇuṣva rādho adrivaḥ ||

Rig Veda 1.10.7

 

“Indra, by you is food (rendered) everywhere abundant, easy of attainment, and assuredly perfect; wielder of the thunderbolt, set open the cow-pastures, and provide (ample) wealth.”

 

   नहि त्वा रोदसी उभे ऋघायमाणमिन्वतः ।     

जेषः स्वर्वतीरपः सं गा अस्मभ्यं धूनुहि ॥    

nahi tvā rodasī ubhe ṛghāyamāṇam invataḥ |     

jeṣaḥ svarvatīr apaḥ saṃ gā asmabhyaṃ dhūnuhi ||

Rig Veda 1.10.8

 

“Heaven and earth are unable to sustain you when destroying your enemies; you may command the waters of heaven; send us lberally kine.” 

 

 आश्रुत्कर्ण श्रुधी हवं नू चिद्दधिष्व मे गिरः ।     

इन्द्र स्तोममिमं मम कृष्वा युजश्चिदन्तरम् ॥    

āśrutkarṇa śrudhī havaṃ nū cid dadhiṣva me giraḥ |     

indra stomam imam mama kṛṣvā yujaś cid antaram ||

 “Oh! your whose ears hear all things, listen quickly to my invocation; hold in your heart my praises; keep near to you this my hymn, as it were (the words of) a friend.” 

 

विद्मा हि त्वा वृषन्तमं वाजेषु हवनश्रुतम् ।     

वृषन्तमस्य हूमह ऊतिं सहस्रसातमाम् ॥    

vidmā hi tvā vṛṣantamaṃ vājeṣu havanaśrutam |     

vṛṣantamasya hūmaha ūtiṃ sahasrasātamām ||

Rig Veda 1.10.10

 

“We know you, liberal rainer (of blessings), the hearer of our call in battles; we invoke the thousand-fold profitable protection of you, the showerer (of bounties).” 

 

आ तू न इन्द्र कौशिक मन्दसानः सुतं पिब ।     

नव्यमायुः प्र सू तिर कृधी सहस्रसामृषिम् ॥    

ā tū na indra kauśika mandasānaḥ sutam piba |     

navyam āyuḥ pra sū tira kṛdhī sahasrasām ṛṣim ||

Rig Veda 1.10.11

 

“Come quickly, Indra, sone of Kuśika, delighted drink the libation; prolong the life that merits commendation; make me, who am a Ṛṣi abundantly endowed (with possessions).”

 

 परि त्वा गिर्वणो गिर इमा भवन्तु विश्वतः ।     

वृद्धायुमनु वृद्धयो जुष्टा भवन्तु जुष्टयः ॥    

pari tvā girvaṇo gira imā bhavantu viśvataḥ |     

vṛddhāyum anu vṛddhayo juṣṭā bhavantu juṣṭayaḥ ||

“May these our praises be on all occasions around you, deserver of praise; may they augment the power of you, who are long-lived, and being agreeable to you, may they yield delight (to us).”

 

Commentary by Sāyaṇa: Ṛgveda-bhāṣya

 

Gāyatriṇaḥ = lit. those who use gāyatrī metre: udgātā, chanter of Sāma hymns; Arkiṇaḥ = reciters of the ṛcā: hotā; Brāmaṇaḥ = brahmā of a sacrifice, a priest so denominated and other brāhmaṇas (or, utterers of prayer. tvā va"ṃśam iva udyemire, they have raised you like a bamboo (vaṃśo vanaśayo bhavati vananācchrūyata iti vā (Nirukta. 5.5); they have elevated Indra, as tumblers raise a bamboo pole, on the summit of which they balance themselves; Vaṃśa = family (i.e. as ambitious person ns raise their family to consequence).    

 

Yat sānoḥ sānum āruhat, mounting from ridge to ridge: this is said of the yajamāna, who goes to the mountain to gather soma for bruising, or fuel for the fire, or other articles required for the ceremony    

 

Kakṣyaprā = lit. filling out their girths, i.e. well-conditioned    

 

Vasu = Indra, the original donor or cause of habitations; from vas, to dwell, nivāsakāraṇa-bhūta    

 

Śakra = Indra, the powerful; from śak = to be able    

 

Lit. Indra, as the sender of rain, should fertilize the fields, and by providing abundant pasturage, enable the cattle to yield store of milk.    

 

Viśvāmitra, the sage, is the son of Kuśika; Legend: Kuśika, the son of Iṣirathi, was desirous of a son equal to Indra; he did penance and Indra was born as the son of Gāthi (Gādhi) (Anukramaṇikā 3.1): kuśikastvaiṣīrathirindratulyam putramicchan brahmacarya cacāra; tasyendra eva gāthī putro jajñe
